Specific Duty

A duty calculated as a fixed amount per unit of quantity (e.g., per kilogram or per liter).

A specific duty is a fixed monetary amount charged per unit of measure, regardless of the goods' value. For example, $0.35 per kilogram or $1.50 per liter. Specific duties are common on agricultural products, beverages, and tobacco. Some tariff codes use compound rates that combine an ad valorem percentage with a specific duty. The unit of measure is specified in the tariff schedule (kg, liter, square meter, number of items, etc.).
